The Catcher in the Rye is a reference to the famous American novel by J. D. Salinger. Set in the 1940s and is noted for it's liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and teenage angst. Sounds like a good a reason to use in it a song lyric then....

Catcher in the Rye could also be a reference to John Lennon's murderer, Mark Chapman. Chapman was carrying a copy of the book when he shot the Beatle.

Queen guitarist Brian May had recorded a guitar part for Axl some years prior to the release of Chinese Democracy. This was ultimately not used, much to May's disappointment who said "Well, it is a shame, perhaps ... I did put quite a lot of work in, and was proud of it. But I could understand if Axl wants to have an album which reflects the work of the members of the band as it is, right now."

Chinese Democracy is the first track off the GNR album of the same name. In typical Axl Rose fashion it is a rant and it appears to be directed at the Politburo who rule China in an undemocratic way as China has a One Party Voting system. Chinese Authorities do not tolerate dissent with the Party view and it's citizen's rights such as free speech are often curtailed as a result. China is slowly waking up to the reality that it needs to become more of a free market economy and such a situation require personal freedoms.

Chinese Democracy opens with police car sirens, introduces hushed Chinese voices and then adds the effect of the wind blowing over the Great Wall.

Madagascar Lyrics Chinese Democracy Guns N Roses

Madagascar was debuted by Axl Rose at the 2002 MTV Video Awards. The show was notable for one of the first real times Buckethead was seen in the Public Eye.

Madagascar is epic in a November Rain sense, but slightly less dramatic and overblown.

The lyrics of Madagascar refer to not being told what to do any more and that resonates with the struggles of Martin Luther King. Stirring words from him speaking are added into the bridge, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

Chinese Democracy has not spread far in China but Axl Rose's version of it certainly is spreading!

Guns N' Roses' last studio album release was 14 odd years ago with 1993’s punk covers album The Spaghetti Incident?. Expectations were high, with many fans worried about the quality of the album. The 2006 / 2007 world tour show cased the new songs, silencing much of the concern.

Confirming the release of Chinese Democracy, Axl's management said “The release of ‘Chinese Democracy’ marks a historic moment in rock ’n’ roll,”. Well it might be if it's any good.....

The song Chinese Democracy was released on October 23 October to radio stations across America.
